Massive Fire Destroys Over 500 Rubber Trees in Wilpattu National Park

Environmental activists are raising alarms after a catastrophic fire resulted in the destruction of more than 500 rubber trees in the vicinity of Wanaathawilluwa, located near the ancient Nelumwewa reservoir within the Wilpattu National Park. This incident reportedly occurred amid ongoing restoration efforts funded by a Rs. 500,000 allocation to rehabilitate the Nelumwewa waterbody, which suffered damage due to the recent 'Ditwa' cyclone.

The reservoir, boasting a water capacity exceeding 100 acres, is nourished by water flowing from the Kala Oya River and supplies crucial irrigation to approximately 700 acres of rubber plantations. Notably, this area is also recognized as a unique environmental system that attracts both local and international bird species, adding to the ecological diversity of the Anavilundawa Ramsar wetlands in the Puttalam District.

Activists emphasize that this act of destruction during a critical period of restoration raises serious concerns about the motives behind the fire. Jayanta Wijesinghe, an environmental advocate, pointed out that a systematic plan to remove rubber trees from the reservoir system has been ongoing for nearly a decade, suggesting that this could potentially be an orchestrated act.

In response to the incident, R. Prabhakaran, the local government secretary of Wanaathawilluwa, confirmed that once informed, the relevant officials took immediate steps to alert the Department of Irrigation and filed a complaint with the police.

Concerns are mounting that the blaze may have spread from dry invasive plant species such as Japanese grass, potentially leading to further devastation in the area. Wijesinghe categorically described the incident as a serious crime, underscoring the alarming trend of such fires reported in other nearby water bodies.
