Local Diesel Prices Surge Amid Global Market Turmoil
As intense military conflicts unfold in the Middle East, diesel prices in the global market are experiencing a sharp increase. Consequently, local pricing for auto diesel is expected to rise between Rs. 515 and Rs. 530 per liter, reflecting ongoing adjustments to the current fuel pricing formula and tax percentages in Sri Lanka.
The recent surge in diesel prices can be attributed to strategic shifts in naval control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait by Houthi fighters, as well as attacks on vessels navigating through the Hormuz Strait. These developments have resulted in the highest recorded diesel prices since February.
Additionally, in a significant shift, the price of diesel barrels in the Singapore Platts market—a benchmark for Sri Lanka's diesel imports—has increased dramatically from its previous cap of $90 to approximately $180.60. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil barrels are averaging $108, and WTI crude oil barrels are selling at about $103.30.
Considering the exchange rate of the US dollar at Rs. 330, the cost of each diesel barrel (equating to 159 liters) translates to approximately Rs. 59,598. This means the baseline price of imported diesel is around Rs. 375 per liter. Furthermore, due to travel risks in volatile zones, shipping costs and insurance premiums may add an additional $10 to $20 million, further inflating the overall costs of bringing diesel into the country. When factoring in government-imposed taxes, operating expenses, transportation costs, and commissions for distributors, the local retail price of diesel is set to exceed Rs. 515 per liter.
The report emphasizes that Sri Lanka has spent a staggering $3.62 billion on fuel imports in the first seven months of the current year—reflecting a significant 68% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2025. This relentless rise in fuel prices on the global market poses severe challenges not only to the national foreign exchange reserves but also to local inflationary pressures, forming a critical pain point for the Sri Lankan economy.
