Local Government Elections Set for July in Four Provinces
After a prolonged delay, the government is gearing up to conduct local government elections in the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in July next year. This development has been reported by the weekend edition of the Lanka Deepa newspaper.
During a meeting held by the Election Commission, Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, the Secretary-General of the National People's Power and a Member of Parliament, emphasized that the provincial council elections must take place in the upcoming year.
With an eye on the forthcoming elections, the National People's Power has already initiated special operations to select suitable candidates who resonate with the public. Political sources indicate that the government is particularly focused on former members of parliament representing the opposition, ensuring that allegations of corruption or misconduct do not arise.
Discussions have reportedly been held with several qualified former parliamentarians, and there are opportunities for representatives with clean political backgrounds to submit nominations under the National People's Power banner.
Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, during his official visit, urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to expedite the long-overdue local government elections.
The urgency in holding these elections is tied to the 13th constitutional amendment, which aims to ensure power devolution in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. India has shown consistent interest in fully implementing this amendment and reinstating the democratic structure.
The Provincial Councils Election Act, passed in 2017, faced defeat in parliament along with the report on demarcating electoral boundaries, leading to a hiatus in local government elections for several years. Since the official tenure of the last provincial councils concluded in 2018 and 2019, the country has been under the administration of governors, devoid of elected representatives for over seven years.
The new government has assured the public that it will address existing legal challenges and conduct these local government elections promptly, either in accordance with existing proportional systems or through new mechanisms. Preparations are underway for the elections in four provinces as the first phase, slated for July.
