මේ පිළිබඳව සෙවණගල සීනි සමාගමේ විධායක අධ්‍යක්ෂ යූ.එස්.බී. කුමාර මහතාගෙන් කළ විමසීමකදී ඔහු සඳහන් කළේ, ගොවීන්ට සිදුවන පාඩුව අවම කිරීම සඳහා දැනට නෙළා ඇති උක් අස්වනු පැල්වත්ත සීනි සමාගම වෙත යොමු කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා බවයි.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, සේවක වැටුප් සහ දීමනා සම්බන්ධයෙන් පැවති සාකච්ඡා එකඟතාවයකින් තොරව අවසන් වී ඇති අතර, මේ වන විටත් උක් වගාබිම් තුළ ටොන් දහස් ගණනක අස්වනු වියළෙමින් පවති.

Labor Dispute Halts Operations at Sevanagala Sugar Company, As Urgent Crop Risks Emerge

The Sevanagala Sugar Company has come to a complete standstill due to a dispute between its workers and administration over bonuses and leave entitlements. This situation poses a serious risk to approximately 6,000 tons of harvested sugarcane, which are now in jeopardy.

The unrest erupted as workers commenced a strike following the non-disbursement of their entitled benefits. Local sugarcane farmers have expressed deep concern over the financial crisis they now face, attributing it to the arbitrary actions of the company’s administration.

With delays in harvesting, farmers are reporting that the sugarcane plants are wilting, leading to a rapid decrease in expected income. They emphasize that their livelihoods are significantly threatened due to the current circumstances.

Allegations from the farmers indicate that the administration is moving towards a decision to sell the company, citing an inability to sustain operations. Key issues have also arisen regarding the lack of proper support from the administration in providing fertilisers and seeds, alongside ongoing conflicts between workers and management that they are compelled to bear the financial burden of.

In a response to inquiries regarding the situation, U.S.B. Kumar, the Executive Director of Sevanagala Sugar Company, disclosed that efforts are underway to direct the harvested cane to Pelwatte Sugar Company in order to mitigate losses for the farmers.

However, negotiations regarding employee salaries and bonuses have concluded without agreement, and thousands of tons of sugarcane remain wilting in the fields, exacerbating the ongoing crisis.
