Concerns Raised Over Unfair Practices in Fuel Pricing in Sri Lanka
Anand Palitha, spokesperson for the United Trade Union, has raised alarming concerns about a significant exploitation in the fuel pricing system. He revealed that premium Octane 95 petrol is being sold at an unjust markup exceeding Rs. 170, which, along with high taxes, is part of a vast operation that exploits the public.
During a special media briefing in Colombo, Palitha highlighted that fuel stations belonging to Lanka IOC (LIOC), Sinopec, RM Parks, and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO) are distributing only Octane 95 petrol without any shortages due to an overwhelming revenue flow from taxes to the government and the unlimited profits gained by these companies.
He noted a critical shortage of Octane 92 petrol at private fuel stations, making it increasingly difficult for average consumers, including three-wheeler drivers and motorcyclists, who have been left with no option but to endure higher-priced Octane 95 petrol. This has created a pressing situation that compels them to spend more or go to great lengths to find suitable fuel alternatives.
Palitha recalled promises made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his time in the opposition, which included implementing a new pricing formula and establishing 75 new filling stations if foreign companies failed to sell fuel at fair prices. He criticized the current government, suggesting that the only solution they have adopted for controlling fuel prices is to continually raise them.
He further emphasized that the government has positioned itself to favor foreign fuel companies, asserting the need for transparency about whether this approach is intended to benefit the struggling populace of the country or merely to facilitate the interests of these foreign enterprises.
