Sri Lanka to Shut Down 34 Inefficient State Institutions, Boost Salaries for Public Sector Workers
The Ministry of Finance has made the crucial decision to close 34 state institutions that have failed to deliver effective services. This measure aims to reinvigorate the appeal of public sector employment, with plans to allocate a significant Rs. 330 billion for enhancing the basic salaries of government employees over the next three years, as highlighted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
President Dissanayake made this announcement while attending the centenary general assembly of the Government Miners’ Association held in Battaramulla, where he served as the chief guest.
Emphasizing the importance of a robust and efficient public sector as a key driver for the nation’s progress, the President revealed that the Finance Ministry has decided to shut down the inactive state institutions, which have become a burden on public funds.
The government is committed to maintaining a strong and efficient public service rather than supporting unnecessary state entities, he asserted. The President acknowledged a significant shift in public sentiment, noting that while citizens once favored government jobs over private sector employment, the current situation has drastically changed.
There is a critical issue in attracting and retaining professionals within the current public service, including miners, engineers, IT specialists, and managers, which has developed into a serious crisis, he stated.
To address this challenge, the government has resolved to raise the basic salary of public sector employees significantly, rather than offering unstable allowances. This increase will be implemented in three phases.
By 2027, the government anticipates bearing an additional burden of Rs. 33,000 million (Rs. 330 billion) solely for the payment of these enhanced salaries, the President pointed out.
While the upcoming budget will not focus extensively on new allowances due to the substantial increase in basic salaries, there will be efforts to review essential sector-specific allowances, such as the miner's office allowance (Rs. 5,700).
Moreover, he noted that there will be no additional increase in basic salaries during the 2028 budget, which will allow for comprehensive solutions to any allowance-related issues within the public sector that may arise that year.
