Sri Lanka Advocates for AI Integration in Health Systems at Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies is crucial for enhancing disease surveillance, assessing climate-related health risks, strengthening emergency preparedness, and improving access to health services, according to Health and Media Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
Speaking at the fifth Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference (MC-5) underway at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, he emphasized Sri Lanka's commitment to advancing public health initiatives.
This event, organized jointly by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Thai government, also saw Minister Jayatissa elected as one of the vice-chairs of the conference.
During a special address at the conference, he acknowledged the significant slowdown in global progress toward achieving sustainable development goals. However, he highlighted that integrating transformative digital technologies, like AI, into health systems presents unprecedented opportunities to manage health risks exacerbated by climate change and to enhance the efficiency of public health services.
Additionally, the minister underscored the importance of sharing the benefits of such advanced technological tools with developing nations facing resource and capacity constraints. He called for the exchange of operational tools, tailoring them to national needs, and fostering regional cooperation to boost capacity building.
Representing Sri Lanka at this prestigious event were Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Media, Engineer (Dr.) Sanath Panawenna, a member of the Public Service Commission, among other officials from the health sector.
