Central Bank Chief Raises Alarm Over Investment Schemes

Concerns are mounting regarding certain companies that have allegedly engaged in illicit deposit-taking under the guise of investment schemes. Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank, highlighted that many individuals who placed their funds with these schemes may find themselves in financial distress.

Responding to queries from journalists at a recent media briefing, Dr. Weerasinghe confirmed that accounts associated with several investment firms have been frozen as part of an ongoing investigation into these dubious practices. He urged people who have deposited money in these companies to come forward and assist the Central Bank in gathering pertinent information.

Indicating that the Central Bank is prepared to take legal action against institutions that have accepted deposits under the pretense of investment, he emphasized the importance of protecting the public from potential losses. The Governor pointed out that sustainable returns, such as annual profits of 40%, can only be achieved through the recruitment of additional deposits, a practice that has noticeably declined recently.

While initial investors might receive some returns, many of those who invest subsequently are likely to face difficulties. Dr. Weerasinghe reiterated that safeguarding the interests of the public remains a top priority for the Central Bank.

He further clarified that funds acquired by these investment firms are not solely used for agricultural purposes, contrary to what may have been implied. Instead, these companies have been redirecting the funds into various business ventures.
