Severe Weather Raises Flood Risks Across Sri Lanka

Intense adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall have caused water levels in the Nilwala River to rise, leading to minor flooding. Authorities from the Department of Irrigation and the Disaster Management Centre have urged the public to remain vigilant as water levels in several major rivers approach alarming heights, increasing the risk of overflow.

According to the most recent reports from the Irrigation Department’s Water Management and Disaster Management Division, the water level at the Talagahagoda measuring station on the Nilwala River has surpassed the minor flooding threshold. Additionally, water levels are now at alarming levels in the Panadugama area located along the Nilwala, with indications of further rises expected.

The Kalu Ganga's Atuganga and the Dunumale area of the Aththanagalle Oya are also nearing alert levels. By early afternoon, the Urubokka River recorded a significant rainfall of 65.5 millimeters, while the Thawalam area of the Gin Ganga saw 31.6 millimeters of rain.

In response to the severe rain, the National Building Research Organisation has issued flood warning alerts, effective for the next 24 hours, advising residents to take necessary precautions.

People residing in hilly and mountainous regions have been cautioned to be on high alert for potential landslides, rock falls, soil erosion, and other signals indicative of imminent disasters. The Disaster Management Centre has called for communities to be prepared to evacuate to safe locations if necessary. A 24-hour emergency hotline and district disaster units have been fully operational to provide relief in case of sudden emergencies.

Amid the heavy rains affecting the central highlands, the local council in Nawalapitiya has implemented a series of precautionary measures to address the rising water level in the Mahaweli River.

Utilizing loudspeaker systems, the local council has worked to inform residents of Nawalapitiya and those living near the Mahaweli River about the potential dangers. Furthermore, multiple rescue service boats from the Sri Lanka Navy have been dispatched to the city to assist in any evacuation efforts should floods or emergencies arise.
