Fuel and Gas Shortages Hit Several Regions Amid Supply Constraints

The recent escalation of fuel and gas shortages in various regions is attributed to certain private companies limiting their supplies, as revealed by Minister of Power and Energy, Anura Yapa Karunatilaka. This trend has been observed in an effort to adjust prices in the local market.

Despite the current situation, the Minister emphasized that the government has no plans to increase fuel or gas prices at this time. He reassured the public that adequate fuel reserves exist in state-owned filling stations under the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, ensuring continuous supply to consumers without any shortfall.

Karunatilaka also pointed out that the ongoing fuel scarcity is primarily linked to privately-operated stations, and the government remains committed to preventing consumers from bearing excessive costs.

In light of rising global fuel prices exacerbated by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, he disclosed that private suppliers are pressuring the government to raise local prices significantly. However, the government stands firm against passing these costs onto the public.

To support consumers affected by the monopolistic practices of certain private companies, plans are underway to establish new filling stations under the auspices of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation in relevant areas.

Addressing the current situation in the gas market, the Minister confirmed that the state-owned Litro company possesses sufficient gas stocks, indicating that there is no shortage on their end.

It has been reported that the shortages arising in the private sector are largely due to these companies advocating for price increases relative to global market rates. According to Karunatilaka, they are restricting supplies by claiming that selling at current prices is not profitable.

In recent developments, several foreign and private companies have been granted opportunities to enter Sri Lanka’s fuel and gas retail market, a move aimed at enhancing competition in the energy sector. However, global oil and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) prices continue to rise rapidly due to the increasing conflicts in the Middle East, posing ongoing challenges for local consumers.
