Rescue Efforts Underway for Injured Elephant in Ampara District

In a collaborative effort, wildlife officers, veterinary teams, the Sri Lanka Army, and police have mobilized to save an injured elephant spotted in the Samanthure area of Ampara District.

This male elephant, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, was observed to be in generally good health, albeit in distress. While there were no visible injuries on its exterior, the creature's unusually distended abdomen has raised concerns—initial investigations suggest that the problem might be due to gastrointestinal blockage or possible ingestion of harmful substances.

The Eastern Regional Wildlife Veterinary Unit, in conjunction with the Ampara Wildlife Office and the Samanthure Beat Office, is coordinating crucial treatment efforts. Steps have already been taken to administer necessary antibiotics to the animal.

Heavy rains in the area have flooded the location where the elephant collapsed, complicating the rescue operations. To facilitate a smoother treatment process, crews are currently working to stabilize the ground with sand.

This complex rescue mission has been supported by ten officers from the Sri Lanka Army, who are working closely with the Department of Wildlife Conservation and local police officers.

To ensure the elephant's safety and the timely administration of medical aid, a team of wildlife officials remains on-site around the clock, maintaining constant surveillance of the situation.
