Flood Risk Rise as Kotmale Reservoir Water Levels Soar Amid Heavy Rainfall

The Central Highlands are grappling with heavy rainfall that has caused significant increases in water levels at the Kotmale Reservoir, prompting the Mahaweli Authority to issue a warning about the potential opening of the spill gates at any moment.

According to an official report released today by the Kotmale Weir and Reservoir Operations Division, as of noon, water levels had risen to 696.96 meters above sea level, which is 78.71% of the reservoir's total capacity.

The maximum water capacity of the Kotmale Reservoir stands at 703.00 meters above sea level, leaving only 36.381 million cubic meters of available space before reaching spill level, as highlighted by Engineer and Deputy Director of Reservoirs E.M.E.K. Senavirathna.

Officials caution that if the prevailing adverse weather conditions continue to elevate water inflow into the reservoir, they may take measures to operate the spill gates. Residents living in low-lying areas, including Nugegoda, Riverside, and Mawatuna, along the Kotmale River valley, as well as communities from Gampola, Waligala, Gelioya, Peradeniya, and across the Katugasthota to Polgolla region, are urged to remain vigilant and alert.

However, authorities have confirmed that they will provide further official announcements before any gates are opened.

Additionally, while the spill gates may remain closed at the Kotmale Reservoir due to rainfall accumulating in the upstream regions, concerns persist over rising water levels in the lower river valleys and the risk of flooding in these lowland areas. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.

This urgent situation has been communicated to district secretaries in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya regions, disaster management centers, local government offices (including Upper Division, Udu-Nuwara, Delthota, Kotmale East/West), and various police stations including Gampola, Athgala, Dawulagala, Peradeniya, Katugasthota, and Nawalpitiya.
