Former Tangalle Municipal Chairman Arrested Over Theft of Fitness Equipment Worth Rs. 2.5 Million
The former chairman of the Tangalle Municipal Council has been arrested by officers of the Tangalle Main Police in connection with the theft of a substantial cache of fitness equipment valued at Rs. 2.5 million.
The 57-year-old suspect, who previously served as chairman representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, resides in the Medakettiya area of Tangalle. His arrest follows a complaint lodged with the police on October 10 by a fitness consultant from the Weeraketiya, Kadugannawa area.
Following the complaint, police investigations revealed that the suspect had rented a room on the upper floor of the main bus stand in Tangalle, where he had allowed the fitness trainer to operate a training center.
After the center was closed by the complainant, the suspect requested the return of the rented room, but the complainant did not take steps to comply with this request.
The former chairman then allegedly opened the room and removed all the fitness equipment, which was estimated to be worth around Rs. 2.5 million, and concealed it at his residence, where it was subsequently discovered by the police.
Further investigations are ongoing regarding the incident.
