Government Intensifies Focus on Social Media Misinformation Amid Rising Tensions

The government is ramping up its vigilance against attempts to incite discord among various ethnic and religious communities in Sri Lanka, as highlighted by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles in Parliament. He expressed serious concern regarding the use of fake social media accounts to exacerbate tensions.

Minister Alles disclosed that both the Criminal Investigation Department and intelligence agencies have launched extensive investigations into these incidents. He emphasized that efforts to disseminate inflammatory content via social media have accelerated in recent years, with data indicating ongoing investigations into six complaints related to such activities over the past decade by relevant authorities.

As the usage of social media in Sri Lanka continues to grow rapidly, the minister noted that some individuals, both locally and abroad, have been setting up fraudulent accounts to spread ethnic and religious animosities among the population.

Addressing challenges faced by law enforcement during these investigations, he pointed out practical obstacles, including the absence of official complaints in some cases, the operation of certain social media accounts from abroad, and limitations within the existing legal framework.

Despite these challenges, the minister assured that law enforcement is diligently working to identify the individuals behind these fake accounts and bring them to justice. His statements came in response to a query from MP M.L.A.M. Hizbullah, who raised concerns about inflammatory remarks circulating via fake social media profiles using Muslim identities.

In a notable development, the minister confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old male resident from Ibbagamuwa, who reportedly used a Muslim name to create a 'WhatsApp' group, allegedly planning an attack on prominent Buddhist sites including the Sri Dalada Maligawa on November 11, 2026, thereby spreading misinformation aimed at inciting violence.
