Intensifying Bipartisan Opposition in Congress Over Trump's Easing of Sanctions on Russia
Amid ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, President Donald Trump’s recent actions to ease economic sanctions against Russia have sparked significant bipartisan backlash within the U.S. Congress, as reported by Reuters.
Notably, even senior representatives from Trump’s own Republican Party are voicing strong criticism of this decision, posing a substantial challenge to the administration.
Recently, the Trump administration took steps to lift restrictions imposed on Russian diesel exports and suspended newly enacted sanctions targeting state officials, oligarchs, banks, and state enterprises in Russia.
Simultaneously, efforts to limit the operational capacity of Ukraine's communication and drone systems, enforced through directives from the White House, further underscore tensions, especially with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky facing pressure to resign.
In response to these developments, five Republican representatives, along with ten Democrats, have sent a letter to the President urging the immediate enforcement of sanctions legislation passed by a significant majority in Congress. They emphasized that Putin's leadership reacts only to pressure rather than goodwill.
Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick warned that any move to limit intelligence sharing regarding Russian aggression could prompt Congressional investigations and lead to funding cuts for responsible agencies. Additionally, Mike Johnson, a key ally of Trump from the Republican conference, expressed his discontent, stressing that Putin is not to be trusted and that lifting sanctions could result in unforeseen severe consequences.
In contrast, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers stated that ending this brutal war remains the President’s top priority and that he possesses the full authority to exercise his executive powers in a manner consistent with national needs. Additionally, fellow Republicans in the Senate, like Ted Budd, stressed that urging Russia back to the negotiating table is a vital strategic move.
As Congress prepares to challenge Trump’s Russia policy through new defense spending bills and state budget proposals following the upcoming midterm elections, analysts predict that such actions may ignite a significant constitutional conflict between the President and Congress.
