Doctors' Association to Launch Nationwide Protests Amid Ongoing Healthcare Crisis

In a decisive move, the Central Committee of the Government Medical Officers' Association has resolved to initiate a series of robust professional actions across the country over the next two weeks. This decision comes in light of the government's neglect of pressing issues within the healthcare sector, as well as the looming crisis exacerbated by a lack of feasible solutions.

The Association highlighted that should the government fail to implement prompt measures to address the problems faced by medical professionals, these protests could escalate into a full-fledged strike. Their stance underscores the urgent need for effective resolutions to prevent the collapse of the healthcare system.

In a recent media release, the committee addressed the ongoing difficulties within the health service, linking them to the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. They reiterated the global recognition of Sri Lanka's healthcare achievements, not solely for maintaining substantial health indicators but also for having established a health system that operates on remarkably low expenditure compared to developed nations.

However, these accomplishments have not shielded the system from the current challenges. The Association pointed out that previous and current governments have played a crucial role in ensuring adequate provisions and policy decisions to sustain public health. Yet, with medical staff working under substantially low salaries and benefits, their efforts have often devolved into mere job functions instead of fulfilling a national duty.

Recent years have witnessed a significant challenge in retaining medical professionals within the country. Principal reasons include salary cuts, insufficient remuneration, high demand abroad, unnecessary political interference during the recruitment of new doctors, and a troubling trend of politically motivated transfers. These factors play a substantial role in the ongoing exodus of physicians.

Efforts by the association to secure practical responses to its members' concerns amidst the financial and political disturbances haven’t yielded favorable results. Despite the government's claims of economic stability and a strong treasury, the necessary financial justice to retain physicians within the health system seems absent.

The situation is further complicated by misinformation regarding salary increments across public service, which instead of resolving issues, fosters social discord among medical practitioners. The ongoing budget proposals lack clarity, suggesting that while doctors’ rights to fair wages are undermined, they face increased taxation that jeopardizes the security of their positions.

The Association has reiterated the need for discussions with the Health and President regarding the budget proposals. Yet, their requests for meaningful discussions have been unmet, leaving the association in a state of dismay as they seek solutions through dialogue.

In response to the deteriorating conditions, the time has come for the Association to take strong measures against the governmental approach that perpetuates political manipulation in appointments and transfers, which adversely impacts the profession's integrity.

Presently, a list of 20 key demands has been submitted to the government, grouped into five critical categories to ensure fair retention of doctors within the country, appropriate salaries, necessary resources for efficient service delivery, tax revisions for professionals, and specific needs for specialists and administrative officers.

During today's extensive Central Committee discussion, it was agreed that over the next two weeks, a nationwide statement from medical professionals will be articulated regarding these issues, aiming to mobilize awareness and action among the community.
