Government Successfully Mitigates Impact of Global Conflict on Local Economy, Minister Asserts
Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation, K.D. Lal Kantha, has underscored the government's effective management and intervention as crucial in minimizing the adverse impacts of ongoing global armed conflicts on the Sri Lankan populace. He emphasized that these strategies have kept the repercussions largely imperceptible to the community.
Speaking during a scheduled program, the minister highlighted the rapid increase in global fuel and fertilizer prices due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions. Despite these challenges, he pointed out that government intervention has enabled Sri Lankans to access fuel at comparatively lower prices than in neighboring countries, as well as maintain oversight on market pricing.
Particularly concerning the fertilizer crisis resulting from regional conflicts, including significant supplier Iran, the minister noted that the government has been proactive in providing support to manage the situation effectively.
While discussing the aid allocated for farmers, Lal Kantha detailed the evolution of financial assistance for fertilizer over time. Initially set at 15,000 rupees per hectare upon assuming office, this amount has since increased to 30,000 rupees per hectare. He remarked that no fertilizer assistance was provided for supplementary crops in the past, but since taking office, they have introduced financial support of 15,000 rupees initially, later raised to 18,000 rupees.
The minister announced plans to extend the fertilizer support scheme to cover supplementary crops, offering the same amount per hectare, starting with the upcoming major cultivation season.
He reiterated that these initiatives aim to revitalize the agricultural sector while empowering the farming community to recover from recent adversities.
