Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa Ordered to be Arrested Over Misuse of Tourism Promotion Funds
In a significant development, Colombo Chief Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara has ordered the immediate arrest of former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa in connection with the alleged misuse of funds from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. The Chief Magistrate directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to present Rajapaksa to court following instructions from the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit.
To facilitate the capture of the suspect, who is currently abroad, the magistrate has authorized the issuance of a Red Notice through Interpol, which will be published in both Sinhala and English to increase the likelihood of successful apprehension.
This order comes after careful examination of evidence submitted by the CID, revealing serious financial discrepancies involving state funds.
The investigation focuses on a financial allocation of 7.8 million rupees that was earmarked for the Tourism Promotion Bureau in 2014. It is alleged that these funds were not utilized for their intended purpose, but rather diverted to purchase 12,000 T-shirts for political campaigning during the Uva Provincial Council elections, resulting in significant financial losses to the government.
*Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
