Archaeological Team Suggests Common Cemetery Practices Following Excavation in Jaffna
Recent excavations at the Chemmani cemetery in Jaffna have unearthed 584 human skeletal remains alongside more than 170 artifacts, leading a team of archaeological experts to propose that the site may represent a regular burial ground rather than a mass grave. This preliminary report was presented to court and highlighted by the Sunday Times.
Led by Senior Professor Raj Somadeva and his colleague Anupa Vanniyanayake from the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology at the University of Kelaniya, the archaeological team conducted extensive excavations and research over a period of more than 80 days. Their findings were submitted to the Jaffna Magistrate's Court earlier this week.
The report suggests that if a sudden catastrophe, such as a pandemic or a natural disaster, were to cause a large number of deaths, it would be reasonable to expect such communal burials. This raises questions about the practices that might have been in place during the time of the burials observed at the site.
However, the report’s observations, interpretations, and conclusions are met with skepticism. Families of the missing persons, who represent a party of interest in the excavation, have lodged a complaint in the Jaffna Magistrate's Court, contesting the interpretations put forth by the archaeological team.
Considering the ongoing disputes and the evidence presented, the group led by Professor Somadeva has implored the court to treat their findings with caution and to refrain from accepting the conclusions as definitive.
