Sri Lanka's President Affirms Independence in Foreign Policy Amid Global Tensions
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasizes that Sri Lanka has gained the capability to adopt an independent and sovereign foreign policy, free from the influence of any global power. This assertion was made during a public rally held in Nikaweratiya, under the theme "Our Government, Two Years - A Blessing for the Country."
He further articulated that, particularly against the backdrop of escalating military tensions in the Middle East, the government's stance is to remain neutral and not show favoritism towards any party. This, he noted, constitutes the essence of the national people’s force's unwavering foreign policy.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining robust diplomatic relations with other nations, the President pointed out that global trade, technological, and economic agreements are crucial as countries are increasingly interconnected within a shared global environment.
In a broader context, he revealed that amidst the developing crisis between the United States and Iran, the Sri Lankan government has taken firm steps to reject requests for U.S. military aircraft to land in Sri Lanka, as well as for Iranian naval vessels to dock at its ports.
Additionally, he remarked that the actions and decisions taken by the Sri Lankan government concerning the Iranian naval incident have garnered significant appreciation from the international community.
