National Parliament Member Addresses the Incarceration of Buddhist Leader Gnanasara Thera
The General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organization, Venerable Gnanasara Thera's recent imprisonment was described as not resulting from extremist influences but rather a consequence of legal proceedings guided by existing laws, emphasized Lakshman Nipunaarachchi, a member of the National People's Power party.
In statements made to the media, Nipunaarachchi expressed a shared sense of shock and sorrow among both Buddhists and the wider public regarding the events surrounding Gnanasara Thera. He clarified that there is no personal animosity towards the revered monk, yet acknowledged the disheartening nature of such an occurrence for a figure in his position, despite any radical tendencies he may have displayed.
The MP highlighted that this incident has shed light on procedural aspects within the prison system, revealing that there are currently 63 monks incarcerated under various charges. He stated that the condition of having monks detained in a Buddhist country is one that is not widely accepted or endorsed.
Moreover, he reported that a committee has already been established to develop the necessary legal frameworks for handling such situations appropriately, underscoring the need for legal reforms to guide actions during instances of misconduct. This committee is expected to present proposals for legal amendments within two weeks.
Commenting on the ongoing foot march from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo protesting this incident, the minister affirmed the people's right to express their emotions peacefully, stating that there should be no hindrance to the peaceful release of such sentiments.
