Former MP Criticizes Government's Domestic and International Conduct
The current government is facing severe international turmoil, according to former parliament member Premanath C. Dolawatta, who highlighted how senior leaders, including the President, divert attention from pressing national issues. He pointed out that instead of addressing significant global dialogues—such as those at the United Nations—the President has been preoccupied with personal attacks on the opposition leader during local political events.
Dolawatta made these remarks during a media briefing held in Colombo. He elaborated that at a crucial time when the President should have been addressing the UN General Assembly, he instead sent an ambassador while discussing the opposition leader's family at a government meeting in the Gampaha area.
The former MP stressed that citizens expect a President committed to discussing the country's development and future on international platforms, not engaging in trivial political clashes. He criticized the administration for its failure to employ competent language translators for international commitments, suggesting this reflects a significant weakness in statecraft.
In addition, Dolawatta raised concerns about the presence of Iranian vessels in Sri Lankan waters, questioning why such a situation persists. He reminded the audience of past distressing incidents involving Iranian boats that had resulted in maritime disasters, emphasizing the necessity for international mediation and proper state intervention to resolve such critical diplomatic issues.
On the topic of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), Dolawatta criticized the government's inconsistent stance. He recalled how different factions within the opposition once rallied against the PTA's existence, yet he accused the current administration of preparing to introduce even more oppressive legislation. This would be a departure from the original act, which refrained from delegating police powers to the military.
He asserted that the proposed new law undermines the military's capacity to engage with civilians effectively, highlighting the lack of proper training for military personnel in handling civil matters. Dolawatta concluded by accusing the government of breaking promises and rather using the tools of oppression to secure its power amidst public dissent.
