Investigation Launched into Organized Wildlife Trafficking Following Death of 'Kavanthissa' Elephant

Concerns have emerged regarding an organized scheme allegedly profiting from the medical treatment of wildlife in Sri Lanka, with potentially lucrative international connections. The recent death of 'Kavanthissa', a well-known elephant, has spurred the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch an extensive inquiry into whether this incident is linked to such unethical practices, as revealed by Minister of Environment Dr. Dhamika Patabandige.

Speaking during the “Maha Jana Dinaya” program aired on the National Television, the minister disclosed that some officials within the Department of Wildlife and veterinary practitioners may be involved in a network that exploits wildlife treatment for profit. This network reportedly films the animals being treated and disseminates the footage across social media platforms and YouTube to generate financial gains.

Inquiries have revealed that certain factions are equipping wildlife officials with camera equipment to capture such footage, which is then sold to content creators both locally and abroad. The minister pointed out that these operations appear to serve a dual purpose: enhancing the visibility of local wildlife treatment efforts while simultaneously engaging in dubious financial transactions.

Specifically, he highlighted a troubling trend where links for 'donations' are included in these YouTube videos, prompting foreign viewers to contribute funds that are directly deposited into personal bank accounts. Minister Patabandige emphasized that the government and the Department of Wildlife do not solicit private donations from the public or foreigners for animal treatment, asserting a commitment to transparency in this sector.

In response to questions regarding whether the circumstances surrounding 'Kavanthissa's' tragic death were indicative of such trafficking schemes, the minister stated that eliminating all suspicion completely is challenging.

There are growing concerns that, in an effort to acquire dollars, intentional shootings or disruptions of treatment processes may occur. The minister confirmed that the CID has been engaged to conduct a thorough investigation into these serious allegations.

As the government prepares to enforce better regulations to combat such irregularities within the wildlife conservation sector, those who stand to lose from their illicit operations are increasingly resorting to spreading false, hateful narratives and misleading the public across social media, the minister added.
