Debate on No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Jagath Vikramarathne Stalled by Legal Complications

The no-confidence motion proposed by the opposition against Speaker Jagath Vikramarathne has hit an impasse due to legal hurdles, complicating its discussion in Parliament. The situation has arisen from ongoing court proceedings related to some allegations made against the Speaker, which are set to be examined in November.

During a meeting of the parliamentary committee on procedures last week, it was decided that the no-confidence motion would not be discussed until the legal case is concluded. This move aligns with the traditional legal principle that matters under judicial review should not be deliberated in Parliament.

Sunil Walpola, the Minister of Public Security, explained that due to the court allocating two days in November for the related case, there would be no opportunity to discuss the no-confidence motion until those proceedings are complete.

Additionally, the Parliament is also scheduled to enter its annual recess in the first week of December, which further complicates the timeline. As a result, insider sources from the ruling party indicate that no final decision regarding the no-confidence motion against the Speaker is expected until January of next year.
