Johnston Fernando Criticizes Officials Over Legal Manipulation and Oppressive Tactics

In a striking commentary, former minister Johnston Fernando condemned certain officials for allegedly misusing the law and fabricating evidence, warning that such practices threaten the integrity of the judicial system. He emphasized that such troubling actions undermine justice, stating, "We have never had an issue with the judiciary, but when evidence is tampered with, the court becomes vulnerable. This is the stark reality." His remarks highlight growing concern among the public over the manipulative tactics employed by a section of government officials.

Fernando made these assertions while responding to inquiries from journalists near the Colombo Magistrate's Court. He further elaborated on the government's strategy of silencing dissent, noting, "Our upcoming rally is set for Matara. We anticipated such moves; the government’s policy appears to involve remanding and imprisoning individuals who challenge its authority. Their sole newsworthy events seem to revolve around arrests, as there’s no coverage of infrastructure developments such as roads, bridges, or ports."

With evident frustration, Fernando pointed out the absence of genuine efforts to lower the cost of living for the people. "Their only focus seems to be on sending people to remand and initiating legal actions," he observed, underscoring the administration’s neglect of pressing economic issues affecting citizens.

He referred to recent comments made by the President, who has toured various districts, addressing the nation. "In Polonnaruwa, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, and Galle, the President has spoken on these matters, yet what’s needed is not mere rhetoric. Every administration must uphold the law without needing to reinvent the wheel," he stressed.

Fernando argued that law enforcement should remain in the hands of the appropriate judicial departments, rather than being manipulated by politicians. "The law has consistently been enacted in this country. Where has it faltered? It is the duty of relevant departments to implement the laws, not for politicians to intervene. This notion is fundamentally flawed. If politicians believe they should wield the law for their purposes, that is inherently wrong. Independent institutions must operate independently," he concluded.
