Former Minister Apologizes for Misuse of Donated Vehicle
A luxury jeep donated to Sri Lanka by a foreign government for disaster management has become the center of controversy following its unauthorized use for personal purposes. Former Minister of Disaster Management, A.H.M. Fowzie, has publicly sought forgiveness from the people of Sri Lanka through a national newspaper, adhering to a directive issued by the Supreme Court.
In this unique public apology, accompanied by a photograph of the vehicle in question, Fowzie emphasized that his decision to apologize was made in respect of the ruling delivered by the Supreme Court during the hearings of the case.
The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado bearing the registration WP KI-4666, is classified as public property belonging to the Disaster Management Centre. The former minister expressed his sincere and heartfelt regret for the inappropriate usage of the vehicle for personal benefit, underscoring the seriousness of the offense to the people of Sri Lanka.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court highlighted that the misuse of the donated vehicle violated the constitutional principle of equality before the law, as stipulated under Article 12(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees basic rights and privileges for all individuals.
