Petition Filed to Investigate Alleged Misuse of State Funds in Court Case Involving Former Minister Champika Ranawaka

The United National Front has lodged two official complaints urging relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into alleged illegal actions concerning a witness related to the court case against former Minister Champika Ranawaka. The complaints highlight concerns regarding the misuse of state funds and unwarranted interference with witnesses.

Submitted to the National Authority for the Protection of Victims and Witnesses and the Attorney General's Department on October 21, these complaints reference evidence provided in court on October 19 pertaining to the ongoing case before the Colombo High Court.

It is alleged that an expenditure of approximately 450,000 rupees, which covered air travel costs, was funded by the government to bring a witness from Germany to Sri Lanka for this case. The manner in which these funds were allocated and managed has raised suspicions, as outlined in the complaint.

The United National Front has accused the authorities of improperly utilizing provisions of the law designed to protect victims and witnesses. They demand clarification on whether due legal processes were followed in securing testimony from overseas witnesses.

Additionally, the complaint calls for an examination of whether financial regulations and legal frameworks were adhered to during the disbursement of state funds. Concerns have been raised about potential influences on the independence of the witness and the fairness of the trial outcome.

The complaint further stresses the necessity of an independent investigation into the use of government funds and insists that legal actions should be taken against anyone found liable for any legal violations.
