Concerns Raised Over Single-Party Rule Aspirations in Sri Lanka
Raviendra Jayasinghe, a member of the political council of the Sri Lanka People's Front, has accused the current National People's Power government of laying the groundwork for a single-party rule. He highlighted that this ideological operation is centrally coordinated from the party's primary office in Pelawatta, amidst growing concerns over the state of democracy in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Sri Lanka People's Front headquarters on Nelum Mawatha in Baththaramulla, Jayasinghe expressed alarm regarding the dangerous trends emerging within Sri Lanka's political landscape.
He noted that there is a significant lack of awareness among the public concerning these alarming developments, raising questions about how informed citizens are about the threat posed to their democratic freedoms.
Jayasinghe emphasized that both the President and the National People's Power government are systematically advancing toward establishing a single-party governance structure, indicating that this political maneuvering is far from coincidental.
Highlighting the remarks of government ministers in various contexts as indicative of this objective, Jayasinghe asserted that their true intention is to secure absolute control under a single-party rule.
He reminded attendees that the President had referred to the publicly elected members of the National People's Power with respect, while disparaging other members as mere pawns. This, he argued, is part of a larger plan being orchestrated at the Pelawatta office to reduce the current Parliament to a mere 'rubber stamp' for the ruling party's agenda.
