Fuel Price Adjustment Expected Tonight Amid Rising Global Oil Prices

The government is poised to announce its monthly fuel price revisions at midnight today, as part of an established pricing formula.

Reports indicate that there is a likelihood of an increase in local fuel prices due to fluctuations in international oil prices. The Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation will reveal these adjustments every month on the last day, with changes taking effect immediately thereafter. Simultaneously, local private fuel companies such as Lanka IOC and Sinopec are also expected to amend their prices accordingly.

In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable uptick in global oil prices, influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and various risks affecting major maritime trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. These factors have contributed to a significant rise in the cost of oil per barrel.

Analysts in the energy sector suggest that this increase in import costs, along with rising shipping fees and insurance premiums, could directly impact retail fuel prices. Therefore, an increase in petrol and diesel prices appears likely.

However, there are hopes that the stability of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US dollar may mitigate the impact of the global price surge to some extent.
