High-Profile Cases Against Former President's Family Set for Hearing in Colombo

Three cases against Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, along with parliament members Namal Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa, are scheduled to be heard today (13) at the Aluthkade court complex in Colombo.

This marks a historic first, as the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has brought forward charges against members of a prominent political family, presenting three separate cases on the same day.

Shiranthi Rajapaksa faces allegations related to the embezzlement of ten million rupees acquired from the National Savings Bank for the procurement of a CT scanner for the Colombo Rich Way Children's Hospital. It is claimed that the funds were misappropriated by being placed in a fraudulent account associated with the 'Siriliya Saviya' organization. The case will be heard today at the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court. Currently, she remains in custody after her arrest on October 7.

Meanwhile, the case against Namal Rajapaksa revolves around accusations of accepting a bribe of 100 million rupees in connection with transactions involving the Krrish company. This case will also be examined today at the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa is facing charges of misusing state funds by being unlawfully recruited as an executive officer in the Sri Lankan Navy and subsequently being sent to the Royal Navy training program in the UK. This case will be addressed today at the Colombo High Court.
