Concrete Road Damage Incident Leads to Arrest of Suspect in Dematagoda

A suspect was apprehended late on the night of the 11th, following an incident where a concrete road was deliberately damaged. Reports indicate that operations are underway to capture four additional suspects involved in the case, according to Inspector Nilantha Ambevardhana, the officer in charge of the Dematagoda police station.

This incident occurred in the context of a government initiative aimed at improving access to tea plantations, which includes the concrete rehabilitation of roads leading to the Kotagala Forest Tea Estate under the supervision of the Dematagoda police. On the 11th, the project was launched with an allocation of 2 million Sri Lankan Rupees for a stretch of 320 meters.

As construction progresses, travel restrictions on the newly paved stretch are enforced for 14 days until the concrete sets properly. However, around 6 PM on the 11th, a group of inebriated youths reportedly insisted on traversing the freshly laid concrete route.

According to local residents, while the plantation workers made efforts to bypass the concrete path, the intoxicated youths deliberately walked along it, ostensibly to vandalize the newly constructed road.

The arrested suspect is scheduled to be presented before the Hatton Magistrate's Court on the 12th, as police continue their efforts to bring the remaining suspects into custody.
