Sri Lanka's Foreign Reserves Expected to Surpass $8 Billion by Year-End
As September draws to a close, Sri Lanka's Central Bank boasts a total foreign reserve of $6.9 billion and anticipates an increase to over $8 billion by the end of the year, according to Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
Speaking at an investment conference in Colombo, Dr. Weerasinghe shared insights on the country's financial outlook, highlighting the imminent disbursement of a new tranche of expanded credit facilities from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These funds, along with anticipated financial support from multilateral financial institutions like the Asian Development Bank, will play a crucial role in bolstering the nation’s reserves.
Furthermore, he indicated that the Central Bank plans to consolidate its reserve target through the direct purchase of excess dollars from the domestic foreign exchange market, which should further enhance the overall foreign reserve levels.
In addition, the Governor reminded attendees of the need for Sri Lanka to begin repaying its foreign debt from 2028, as per agreements reached during the international debt restructuring process. He expressed confidence that the existing level of foreign reserves, which is currently strengthening, would be sufficient to handle the estimated annual debt repayment burden of approximately $4 billion.
