Police Launch Investigation Against Ven. Balangoda Kasspa Over Misleading Statements During Protest

The police in Kurunegala have initiated an investigation against Ven. Balangoda Kasspa following his contentious statements regarding individuals who participated in a recent Satyagraha held at Viharamaha Devi Park. These remarks, viewed as false and potentially inflammatory, have stirred significant public concern, as reported to the courts on the 26th.

This development came during a session with Colombo's Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, where police officials detailed the unfolding situation.

The inquiry was triggered by a complaint from Jagath Basnayake, the chief organizer of the National People's Power based in Pelawatta, who argued that Ven. Kasspa’s statements misrepresented the facts surrounding the protest.

According to police reports presented in court, two individuals alleged to have been present at the protest site were linked to Ven. Kasspa's media statements dated the 22nd. The officials indicated that these remarks could incite discord and mislead the public.

Furthermore, the complaint emphasized that the declarations were entirely unfounded, designed to provoke public outrage and undermine trust in the authorities. The police have committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will update the court accordingly.
