Religious Leaders Express Concerns Over Buddhist Monk's Mental Well-being in Custody
The chief secretary of the Bodhu Bala Sena organization, Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, is reportedly grappling with severe mental stress while in custody. Ven. Anandasiri Thero disclosed that Gnanasara had conveyed thoughts of endangering his life to a minister prior to being subjected to disciplinary action.
During a press conference held in Colombo, Ven. Anandasiri elaborated on the circumstances surrounding Gnanasara’s recent incarceration. He recalled the release of a book titled "Namayai Paha," which occurred approximately two weeks prior to the monk's arrest. He stated that amidst his mother’s serious illness, he had earnestly requested intervention from the chief monks for support.
Gnanasara Thero attributed his current predicament to procedural failures during former President Maithripala Sirisena's administration, revealing that the ordeal had left him deeply shaken and mentally troubled.
Addressing a considerable public petition seeking a presidential pardon for Gnanasara, Anandasiri noted that about ten thousand signatures had been collected from a local temple in the Mayiyanagana area, emphasizing that the movement continues to garner signatures from numerous temples across the country.
Pointing out the prevailing societal unrest, Anandasiri insisted that, irrespective of statements made by prison officials, Gnanasara deserves forgiveness given the current circumstances, a sentiment echoed by prominent leaders including the Chief Monk Venerable Dhammasiddhi Gnanasara from the Asgiriya Chapter.
Amidst these developments, Anandasiri condemned attempts on social media to undermine the Buddhist clergy, specifically criticizing accusations involving monks like Ven. Ananda from Murutettuwé and Ven. Nalaka from Bengamuwa, regarding their alleged affiliations with luxury establishments.
Highlighting the esteemed status of the Buddha as a leader of noble ancestry and the traditional rights of the Buddhist clergy to operate in any royal or hospitable setting, he expressed dismay at the circulating derogatory narratives aimed at discrediting the monks, attributing such behavior to groups misinterpreting Buddhist principles.
