Severe Weather Warning Issued for Bengal Sea as Cyclone Threat Looms

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the maritime community operating in the Bengal Sea, highlighting a critical risk of significant cyclonic activity due to a developing low-pressure area in the region.

A special announcement circulated by the Disaster Management Center to all media outlets, including the government news agency, clarifies that this alert will remain in effect for the next 24 hours, as per advisories from the Natural Disaster Early Warning Center of the Meteorological Department.

The previously existing low-pressure zone associated with the northern Andaman Islands has intensified into a more defined depression. As of last night at 11:30 PM, it was located near 15.5° North latitude and 91.0° East longitude. The system is expected to strengthen into a deep depression as it progresses through the eastern-central and adjacent coastal areas of the Bengal Sea today.

This weather system is forecasted to continue moving westward, with a high probability of developing into a “cyclonic storm” by tomorrow morning (26th). Furthermore, by the morning of the 27th, it is anticipated to transform into a “severe cyclonic storm” over the central-western waters of the Bengal Sea.

As a precaution, fishing and maritime operations within the deep-sea limits between 10° and 20° North latitude and 80° to 95° East longitude are to be completely halted until further notice. All vessels currently in these waters have been urgently advised to navigate to safe harbors.

With the end of the southwest monsoon and the onset of the second inter-monsoon, it is common for such low-pressure systems and cyclonic storms to occur during October and November in the Bengal Sea. This period is characterized by rough sea conditions and strong winds reaching speeds of 70–80 km/h.

Authorities urge the fishing and maritime community to remain vigilant regarding weather updates and to contact the Disaster Management Center’s emergency hotline at 117 for immediate assistance or further information in case of emergencies. They also emphasize the importance of closely monitoring updates and warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.
