Cybersecurity Breach at SriLankan Airlines Triggers Investigations

A significant cybersecurity breach targeting the computer and email systems of SriLankan Airlines has come to light, prompting the initiation of two separate investigations. Janith Ruwan Kodithuwakku, the Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, disclosed this matter on Sunday, highlighting the prompt failure to notify the Civil Aviation Authority regarding the incident.

In parliament, opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara revealed alarming details about the incident. A group of hackers reportedly accessed the airline's internal systems and threatened to leak sensitive data, demanding a ransom of $50,000 in cryptocurrency, while posting a video on the 'Dark Web' to showcase their breach.

Responding to these serious allegations, SriLankan Airlines issued an official statement firmly denying any breach of their information technology systems and asserted that their systems remained unharmed and under their complete control.

However, following the cybersecurity incident, the global airline alliance Oneworld temporarily suspended SriLankan Airlines from its 'CarrierConnect' network, which facilitates data sharing among member airlines. The deputy minister later confirmed that the airline's access was restored after a formal mediation.

Deputy Minister Kodithuwakku emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the failure to inform the Civil Aviation Authority about the incident immediately was a significant issue. He noted that the authority has sought clarification from SriLankan management regarding the breach.

According to directives from the Civil Aviation Authority, any suspicious activities, system outages, or cybersecurity threats within the organization are required to be reported via an established special online system. However, industry unions have accused SriLankan authorities of attempting to cover up the incident.

Nisal Adikari, the head of the inter-company workers' union aligned with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, indicated that an international hacker group compromised the airline’s network. He pointed out that despite receiving warnings about potential threats from representatives of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration in Singapore, the airline management failed to take appropriate action or conduct an independent investigation.

Given the sensitivity of passenger information, reservations, and airline safety involved in this incident, labor unions are urging the government to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation immediately.
