Government Warns of Legal Action Against Fuel Suppliers Limiting Supply

Energy Minister Anura Yapa Karunaratne has issued a stern warning to private fuel companies, emphasizing that legal measures will be taken against those who attempt to restrict fuel supply, thereby inconveniencing consumers. His comments come amidst rising tensions regarding the availability of fuel across the nation.

During a media briefing, the Minister made it clear that the government is resolutely opposed to any significant hikes in fuel prices which could put undue pressure on consumers. He stated that the government has no plans to allow companies to exploit consumers by raising prices excessively at their request.

However, he acknowledged that fuel companies still have the opportunity to set prices based on cost structures outlined in their agreements. Should the situation require it, these companies can utilize this pricing mechanism, he noted.

Highlighting the global context, the Minister pointed out that fuel prices in Sri Lanka have not escalated in tandem with international market trends. While recent increases saw local fuel prices rise by 10 rupees per liter, he revealed that the government is currently subsidizing approximately 70 rupees per liter to alleviate consumer burden.

He disclosed that in recent months, a staggering 57 billion rupees had been allocated for fuel subsidies, with an additional 41 billion rupees set aside for the upcoming three months. This financial commitment underscores the government's efforts to support citizens amid ongoing economic hardships.

Amidst a tough economic landscape, the Minister stressed that while a considerable portion of the increased fuel costs is being shouldered by the government, private fuel companies also bear their share of the burden. He pointed out that the consumer only feels a minimal impact from these hikes, reflecting a judicious approach to pricing.

Following reports of certain fuel stations limiting supply, the Minister reassured the public that the government's aim is not to cause distress to investors. He firmly stated that allowing any group to treat consumers carelessly is unacceptable. If such actions continue, he warned, authorities would be compelled to take legal action concerning licensing and operational permits.
