Strike Launched by Halawatha Municipal Council Employees Following Assault on Colleague

A sudden strike was initiated on the morning of the 15th by the employees of the Halawatha Municipal Council, protesting against the assault of one of their own by the husband of an independent council member. The Council's municipal workers are demanding action following this incident, which occurred on the 13th of this month.

The victim, identified as Chaminda Susanta, who works in the electrical department of the council, was admitted to the Halawatha General Hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries. He is currently being cared for in Ward 04.

Interestingly, it has been noted that the individual accused of carrying out the assault is also an employee in the same electrical department, married to the municipal councillor involved.

Despite calls from the majority of municipal workers for the relevant authorities to ensure strict legal action against the involved parties, Vidura Prasanna, the council's deputy chairman, expressed concerns that no appropriate measures have been taken so far.

In response to the tensions resulting from the strike, Jude Prameed Perera, the chairman of the Halawatha Municipal Council, stated that a disciplinary investigation has already been launched against the worker implicated in the assault and confirmed that actions will be taken according to the report of this inquiry.

To address the situation and foster a resolution, a special meeting with the municipal council employees was held, led by the chairman earlier in the morning.
