Sri Lankan National Assaulted in Saudi Prison, Officials Confirm Steps for Safety
Recent reports indicate that Anojan Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan national sentenced to death and currently held at the Dammam Central Prison in Saudi Arabia, was assaulted during a prison altercation. Representatives from the Sri Lankan Embassy, including the Ambassador and a medical officer, conducted two separate visits to the prison following the incident, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Minister Wijitha Herath in Parliament.
The conflict reportedly arose from a confrontation with another inmate, which escalated. Notably, no weapons were involved in the incident. The prison's medical officer has verified that Sivarasa sustained only minor injuries, consisting of marks and bruises caused by the other detainee's punches.
Officials have assured that Sivarasa's life is not presently in jeopardy. To enhance his safety, measures are being taken to transfer him to a different facility within the prison system, a decision confirmed by the embassy.
Sivarasa's case is currently under examination by Saudi Arabian judicial authorities, with an appellate court scheduled to announce its verdict on September 17, 2026. Minister Herath emphasized that the government is actively engaged, collaborating with local legal experts and Saudi legal advisors to facilitate an appeal to the Saudi Supreme Court.
