Notably, during this monumental financial endeavor, the company's CEO has raised alarms about the potential existential threats advanced artificial intelligence might pose to humanity.
Headquartered in San Francisco, Anthropic plans to enter the US stock market next month under the ticker symbol ‘ANT’ on the Nasdaq.
The company aims to raise about $100 billion through this IPO, which would surpass SpaceX's previous record of $86 billion set in June.
As a result, Anthropic’s market valuation could soar to between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, positioning it alongside industry giants such as Tesla.
According to the IPO filing, Anthropic's revenue is projected to exceed $16 billion in the first half of 2026, reflecting a staggering 14-fold increase compared to the previous year’s figures. However, it is noteworthy that the company reported a net loss of $80.7 billion during the same period due to high research and operational costs.
Founded in 2021 by 43-year-old CEO Dario Amodei and his 39-year-old sister Daniella, alongside a group of partners, Anthropic has achieved remarkable growth in its short history. A successful IPO could significantly enhance their wealth into the billions.
In an unusual move to prioritize public safety over mere profit, the company has established an independent trust called the ‘Long-Term Benefit Trust’ to avert a sole focus on profits.
The filing includes over 100 pages of 'risk factors,' highlighting warnings about potential dangers that have drawn international scrutiny. Among these are concerns that malicious entities could utilize AI technology to develop chemical weapons, autocratic regimes might employ technology for citizen repression, and that AI systems could operate autonomously, potentially endangering humanity as a whole. Amodei previously cautioned that without some control, hazardous AI agents could emerge, threatening the internet within the next six to twelve months.
Anthropic asserts that it prioritizes ethical and secure AI development, aiming to prevent its technology from being used for military operations or group surveillance. This position has led to considerable friction with American defense agencies, particularly given that the Trump administration labeled the company a national security threat. Anthropic has taken legal action against the Pentagon, a case that is currently at the appeals level. Meanwhile, in response to its disputes with Anthropic, OpenAI—its primary competitor—has begun pursuing expedient agreements with the Pentagon.
