President Announces New Economic Agreement to Enhance Stability and Growth

In an effort to secure ongoing economic stability gained through the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed the government's readiness to enter into a new agreement aimed at stimulating further economic growth in the country.

This announcement was made during the Sri Lanka Economic and Investment Summit, where the President highlighted the significant progress achieved under the IMF’s four-year Extended Fund Facility program, particularly in stabilizing the economy.

He emphasized that the government's main priority is to maintain this stability while striving for the economic growth necessary for national development.

Reflecting on the objectives set after the government came into power, the President noted that there were minimal barriers posed by the IMF agreements during the implementation phase. This smooth progression has facilitated efforts to advance the stabilization of the economy without contention, due to the alignment between the government’s vision and the IMF's plans.

With approximately six months remaining in the current IMF program, the President indicated that discussions are ongoing with an expert team, including the Ministry of Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, regarding the nature of the next phase of engagements.

Additionally, the President assured that the government is approaching the next steps with an open mindset, emphasizing a commitment to creating a robust economy capable of withstanding potential external economic shocks, rather than solely relying on abandoning the IMF or limiting agreements.
