Police Chiefs Held Accountable for Mistreatment of Detainees
The Sri Lankan government has issued a directive emphasizing that any physical abuse or mistreatment occurring to individuals in police custody will be the direct responsibility of the respective police station chief or the lead investigating officer. This announcement aligns with a series of stringent guidelines provided by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, dispatched to police stations across the country.
In remarks made during a query on the matter, Minister Wijepala stressed the importance of adhering to proper legal protocols when dealing with suspects. He revealed that regional police chiefs and lead investigators are being urged to utilize 'Zoom' technology to receive instructions effectively.
Emphasizing the government's stance, the Minister asserted that no form of ill-treatment or human rights violation against any detainee is permissible. He pointed out that strict legal actions will be enforced against any officials found engaging in such unlawful activities, regardless of their rank.
Addressing a recent incident involving the tragic death of a young man in the Homagama Police Station, the Minister indicated that investigative measures have already been taken against the officers implicated. Preliminary information suggests that the individual may have been subjected to some level of mistreatment while in custody. Based on judicial medical reports and other evidence, appropriate legal proceedings are set to occur in court as confirmed by the Minister.
