Call for Transparency in Government Sponsorship of International Tourism Conference

Senior Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has urged the government, along with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to provide clear details regarding the allocation of public funds for an upcoming international conference aimed at promoting tourism. His comments were made during a media briefing held in Colombo.

Emphasizing the importance of accountability, Dewasiri pointed out that the source of the funds, whether derived from tax revenues or other means, is irrelevant in light of the fact that the Cabinet has approved the expenditure. Ultimately, he argued, these funds represent public money.

He stressed that when it comes to supporting projects funded by public money, it is the responsibility of the government and relevant ministries to keep the public informed about the measures taken and the financial transparency involved.

In a separate but related issue, Dewasiri criticized the country's anti-terrorism laws, asserting that such legislation has often been used more to suppress the democratic rights of the general populace than to combat actual terrorism. He outlined a pressing need for a broader discussion on protecting citizens from oppressive laws rather than simply focusing on state security against terrorism.

He reiterated that safeguarding the fundamental rights of the people should take precedence, asserting that these rights should never be compromised under any circumstances.
