Stranded Fishing Crew Rescued Off Pothuvil Coast Amid Severe Weather
The recent impacts of the cyclonic weather system 'Arnab' have disrupted communication channels at sea, leading to the successful rescue of a fishing vessel, identified as “IMUL-A-0022 TLE,” and its four crew members approximately 200 nautical miles off the Pothuvil coast.
The vessel, which embarked on a four-day fishing expedition from the Kudawella fishing port on October 21, was manned by W.P. Priyantha, P.B. Nimal Siri, L.Y. Naushka, and the boat's owner, K.H. Sawindu. Sudden adverse conditions caused by cyclone Arnab resulted in a complete breakdown of all communication between the vessel and the shore.
Reports regarding the missing vessel triggered immediate action from the Department of Fisheries' search and rescue coordination center. Acting swiftly, the Ministry initiated a comprehensive joint search operation involving the Sri Lankan Navy, the Coast Guard, and other fishing vessels operating in the area. As a result of these collaborative efforts, the vessel was located today in deep sea, and actions to safely retrieve the crew members are underway. Fortunately, all fishermen are reported to be in good health, and necessary basic medical assessments and first aid are currently being administered.
The Ministry expressed gratitude for the prompt actions of the Sri Lankan Navy and the Coast Guard, as well as the substantial support from the entire fishing community that aided in the rescue operation.
Given the ongoing global climatic changes and the emergence of such severe weather systems, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources urges all fishermen to adhere closely to daily weather advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology. Furthermore, they emphasize the importance of confirming the operational condition of communication devices before venturing out to sea.
