Cash Disappearance Sparks Investigation in Palindanuwara Local Council

The Buduruwagala Police have initiated an extensive investigation following the mysterious disappearance of 3 million rupees stored in the desk drawer of the Chairman’s official office at the Palindanuwara Pradeshiya Sabha, governed by the National People’s Power.

This inquiry began after a complaint was lodged by the Chairman, Don Sanath Jeevananda of Galhena Kanda. He reported that on September 15, 2023, the local council’s Vice Chairperson, Kumari Munasinghe, entrusted him with her personal funds totaling 3 million rupees, intended for the purchase of a vehicle.

The Chairman indicated that he had securely placed this cash inside his desk drawer, which he routinely opened to check the funds’ safety. He confirmed that he verified the drawer's contents daily.

On October 7, around 11 a.m., the Chairman provided the drawer key to his office assistant in order to retrieve his official seal. After the assistant returned the key later that day, around 1:15 p.m., the Chairman discovered that the entire sum of 3 million rupees was missing from the drawer.

He disclosed that he delayed reporting the theft to the police as he sought to recover the funds privately before seeking official assistance.

The Buduruwagala Police Station is now documenting statements from the staff at the local council under the guidance of the police chief. The prolonged retention of such a substantial amount of personal cash within an official office raises serious concerns regarding public finance and administrative regulations.
