Queues Form as New Tax Identification Number Requirement Sparks Rush for Vehicle Revenue Licenses
Long queues have formed outside local revenue offices across the country today as citizens seek to obtain their Tax Identification Number (TIN) in response to new regulations mandating its presentation for renewing vehicle revenue licenses.
Starting November 1, the requirement to provide a TIN for vehicle revenue licenses has led a large number of people to quickly rush to local offices to secure their numbers. This surge in demand has resulted in significant wait times at various locations.
Frustration grew among those waiting for hours, as many offices reported issuing TINs had been temporarily suspended due to technical issues with the Department of Inland Revenue's computer systems.
Additionally, individuals trying to access TINs online through the Department's official website expressed their discontent after the high volume of simultaneous users caused the online service system to crash, rendering it completely inoperative.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy under the International Monetary Fund's financial relief program, aimed at expanding the tax base and increasing government revenue. As a result, the government has made the acquisition of a TIN mandatory for all citizens aged 18 and above.
Subsequently, the TIN will become a crucial document for various essential public services, including motor vehicle registrations, annual revenue license renewals, property transfers, opening bank mobile accounts, and obtaining building plan approvals. The Ministry of Finance has issued a special gazette notification to formalize this requirement.
