Minister Alleges Misuse of Funds for Private Media Amid Economic Hardship

During a session in Parliament, MP Chamara Sampath Dasanayake raised serious allegations regarding the misuse of government funds earmarked for the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Conference. He claimed that money had been granted to a private media institution without a proper tender process, leading to extravagant spending on welcome drinks and cocktail events.

Speaking during a special statement, Dasanayake disclosed that the Tourism Promotion Bureau had allocated approximately 100 million Sri Lankan Rupees (around 10 million USD) to the private media organization through a Cabinet paper.

He elaborated on how the funds were spent, revealing that 4.5 million rupees had been used solely for the welcome drinks, while 5 million rupees were spent on cocktail parties. An additional 12.8 million rupees was allocated for what was described as entertainment trips under the guise of tourism promotion. "Three percent of the general public—who don’t even know what a cocktail is—are wondering whose money is being used for these expenses," he emphasized.

Dasanayake pointed out the lack of transparency in the transaction, as the government media institutions—including the National Television and the Independent Television—were operating under the Ministry of Media. He noted that releasing funds to a private media entity within just two days of a Cabinet paper raised serious doubts about possible irregularities.

Though Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated at a press conference that the funding was not government money, Dasanayake questioned why a Cabinet paper had been submitted if that were the case.

In light of the severe economic pressures facing the people, including shortages of essential medicines, crop losses, and flood disasters, the MP underscored that such lavish expenditures are completely unjustifiable.

Dasanayake also characterized the transaction as an act of corruption, disclosing that over ten complaints had already been submitted to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption regarding this issue.
