Urgent Order to Demolish Unauthorized Structures at Thilipan Memorial in Jaffna

The acting deputy police chief of Jaffna has issued a directive to the Jaffna Municipal Council, urging immediate action to demolish all unauthorized constructions within the premises of the Thilipan Memorial located in the Nallur area.

This memorial was established in remembrance of Thilipan, who tragically died while on a hunger strike, with the land used for the memorial situated outside the Nallur circumferential road, belonging to a place of worship.

Although the property has been long-term leased to the Jaffna Municipal Council, the deputy police chief highlighted in his communication that the construction of the memorial proceeded without the formal or legal approvals from the council.

Furthermore, the police emphasized that the presence of this unauthorized memorial poses a risk of rekindling memories of past conflicts among the public, potentially threatening the fragile ethnic harmony that currently exists among communities.
