Severe Rainfall Causes Significant Disruption in Colombo

This afternoon, torrential rains inundated the city of Colombo and surrounding areas, leading to widespread flooding that severely affected numerous main roads and hampered both rail and highway transportation systems. Thousands of commuters, returning home from work, faced immense difficulties due to the weather conditions.

In a matter of hours, major thoroughfares such as Kollupitiya, Galle Road, Boralesgamuwa, Maradana, Ameriweediya, Thummulla, and the Town Hall area were submerged to nearly two feet deep, halting vehicle movement entirely.

Additionally, significant traffic congestion emerged on several highways leading out of Colombo, with kilometer-long backups reported due to adverse weather conditions.

The breaking of a signal system between Colombo Fort and Maradana railway stations caused extensive delays in train services across all routes this afternoon. As a result, several trains scheduled to operate at peak hours on the coastal railway, Kelaniya, and Puttalam routes could not depart on time, creating crowded platforms filled with frustrated passengers, with many trains delayed for hours.

Prior warnings from the Meteorological Department indicated that ongoing inclement weather across the island could lead to heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters in certain areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern Provinces during evening or nighttime hours.

Moreover, during short but intense downpours in the Colombo urban area, inadequate drainage systems and obstructions have exacerbated flash flooding situations, highlighting vulnerabilities previously pointed out by disaster management authorities.

With the forecast predicting continued rainfall in the coming days, especially during the evenings, disaster management officials are urging the public to take precautions while driving and to plan their journeys carefully.
