Concerns Raised Over Safety of Individuals in Custody Following Recent Tragedies
Recent incidents highlighting violence and fatalities among detainees have sparked serious concerns regarding the protection of human life and dignity within Sri Lankan prisons. Namal Rajapaksa, a former parliamentarian and current national organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, emphasized that these events are not isolated occurrences, underscoring a governmental obligation to ensure safety and protection for all individuals in custody.
Drawing from his own experiences during detention, Rajapaksa shared insights through a notable post on his official 'X' account. He pointed out a stark reality: individuals in prisons are not merely statistics, but are primarily dependent on State institutions for their security, a fact that must not be overlooked.
Rajapaksa reminded the public of the tragic events at the Meegamuwa Prison, where 28 individuals lost their lives. According to medical reports presented in court, 17 died from gunfire, while another 11 were victims of assaults with blunt weapons. Although nearly four months have passed since this incident, the lack of autopsy reports raises serious questions, with families of the deceased still awaiting justice.
Highlighting the recent deaths of 29-year-old Ishara Harshakumara while in the custody of the Homagama police and a 41-year-old man during his confinement in the Kurunegala, Kobeygane police, Rajapaksa pointed out the troubling implications this has for the treatment and safety of those under State care.
The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has expressed its deep concern over these occurrences, calling for independent investigations. Rajapaksa argued that the rule of law seems to favor only a select few, undermining its intended purpose. He stressed that justice should be impartial and conducted fairly, superseding political necessities, while safeguarding fundamental rights.
"While an individual's freedom may be restricted, their right to live, dignity, and security cannot be compromised. Today’s pressing question is, who is responsible for protecting those behind bars? Who is ensuring that the truth does not get lost in the shadows? It is an unshakeable duty of the government to safeguard every life under its charge," Rajapaksa asserted in his extensive remarks.
